Fort Sam Houston Golf Course
1050 Harry Wurzbach Rd
San Antonio, TX 78209-6443, United States

Although both 18-hole layouts ("La Loma" and "Salado Del Rio") are on Fort Sam Houston, they are open to the public. Both of these well-regarded courses have hosted the All-Army Championships and the Texas Open, and "La Loma" is actually a 1935 A.W. Tillinghast layout.

LaLoma course is in excellent condition considering the drought conditions experienced in San Antonio. Greens were slow but perfectly kept and fairways also in excellent condition. Round of golf, cart "and hot dog" included in greens fee. One of the best deals around.

Hospitality at this clubhouse is terrible. The last time I went there was actually a bit better than I am used too, but was still an issue. It's almost like an awkward feeling when you come in the pro shop, like they are bothered by you being there... Not impressed and it needs to be addressed... The courses are great IMHO however. La loma has a much more open layout than salado, and I prefer to walk when I play and this course is perfect for that. Salado is a bit harder to walk, much more elevation change, and tougher overall slope rating. For the money, it is a great deal. I am military so the rate is based on my rank, but for civilian players, it is still a great value for the money.

The Salado Course at Ft. Sam Houston is a nice course. The problem I have with it is that the course is on the base but the club house is off base and none of the gate guards seem to know this. Also, there are no signs pointing toward the club house. It took me almost 40 minutes to find the club house. When I finally found it I was greeted by a somewhat uninterested in having a job young man, who I was obviously bothering and had taken away from watching TV. I told him that this was my first time to the golf club and I would like to get a cart for 18 holes and a bucket of balls, so he swiped my card and gave me the reciept and started waiting on the next person behind me. After he was done with that person, I asked him if I needed a key for the cart. He said, "Oh, I didn't give you one?" I said "No." Then I had to ask where are the golf carts? Where do I get the bucket of balls? Where is the driving range? and Where is FIRST TEE??? Needless to say customer service is not a strong suit there. Luckly I met some very nice guys that let me join there group and we had fun round. The course has a few challenging holes but is good for all handicaps. Very well kept and a very good price($26)for 18 holes and a cart. Once I got away from the club house it was a good experience.
