The United States Open has been played seven times at Baltusrol, on three different courses - another unique record. Taking some of the existing holes of Louis Keller's original, circa-1895 9-hole course, A.W. Tillinghast designed both the Upper and Lower courses, both of which were updated by Robert Trent Jones Sr., while Rees Jones did some additional restoration work on the Upper Course.

The club has hosted 16 major professional and amateur championships on both courses; the 2016 PGA Championship will be played over the Lower course. In October of 2014, the club was designated a National Historic Landmark.
