Butler National is usually ranked among the top thirty courses in the United States for its difficulty; the "Butler" tees are rated at 78.1 with a daunting 152 slope. Butler National is also well-known for having hosted the PGA Tour's Western Open from 1974 until 1990, when the Shoal Creek PGA Championship scandal resulted in the PGA Tour moving the Western Open from Butler National to Cog Hill in Lemont, Illinois.

This is a private, members-only club with membership by invitation only; women are not allowed on the property.
