This course was designed by James Braid who designed the Gleneagles Kings Course. It is an interesting and fairly testing course. The 10th is a superb par 3 and the 18th is a brilliant risk reward finish. As munis go this is one of the best in my area, and always in reasonable condition. The golf shop is very helpful and friendly but there is no cafe or bar. The extensive drainage work has greatly improved the course but like any course it can be closed in exceptionally wet weather. The pace of play is reasonable and the environment is relaxing.

As Municiple courses go, this is not bad. it gets wet as it lies on low ground which is relaimed. if Sparky was to go today I am sure he would rate it better than one star.

Hoylake Municipal golf course has in the recent year undergone a massive drainage program. The condition of the course was poor due to drainage machinery that had been used on the course. Also damage to the sprinkler system resulted in poor greens. Now the drainage work has finished, and the sprinkler system is working. Hoylake is already showing signs of improvement and the members are looking forward to a dry course this winter season.
