Both the Olde Course (1911, Hugh Wilson) and the Karakung Course are owned by the City of Philadelphia and operated by Billy Casper's golf management firm. They are located along the waterway of the same name, along the Philadelphia-Delaware County line. The Olde Course has been ranked the sixth-best municipal course in the United States by Golfweek Magazine.

Somewhere different to play. $20 with cart was awesome, but the course needs a lot of work. A shame, with some care, it could be pretty interesting.

Karakung was the worst course I've played. The fairways were indistinguishable from rough. Homeless guys drinking booze and selling balls on the back. Greens had weeds in them and bunkers were more dirt than sand. The pro shop said they stopped maintaining karakung and only service the olde course.

The Olde Course is on a magnificent layout rumored to be designed by Hugh Wilson of Merion fame. Unfortunately, some of the original holes were absorbed by what is now a driving range. The course was re-routed and neglected by the city for budget reasons I suppose. Holes of note include the par 4 15th and the par 3 17th.

Despite the conditions, I still enjoy the occasional round here. The two par 5s on the front play as par 4s from the white tees. Quite a few of the back tees are rarely used which is disappointing. The PGA Tour (or whatever it was known as back then) hosted and event on Cobbs in the 50's or 60's.

There are rumors of a grassroots effort to restore the original layout; however, I am not sure if there as been progress during the recent recession. Bottom line is the place needs modern irrigation and a lot of tree work to restore it to its glory.

If rounds played is how a Muni is judged, the Olde Course is a rousing success. It is typically packed to the gills on every weekend in the summer which contributes to the poor conditions and ultra slow play.

My bottom line recommendation is to give it a try during a weekday or a weekend in early spring or late fall to avoid the crowds.
