NCC has hosted several Canadian national championships, including the 1946, 1952, and 1960 Canadian PGA Championships; the 1961 Canadian Open; the 1974 RCGA Men's Amateur Championship; and the 1956, 1972, and 2001 Canadian Ladies' Amateur Championships. The course itself was designed by the notable Canadian architect Stanley Thompson; modern-day architect Doug Carrick was retained to do a restoration of the original Thompson design.
