Seven golf courses in the world are named "Oakmont," but this is the real Oakmont.

This very famous (and fiendishly difficult) private course was the brainchild of Pittsburgh iron magnate Henry Clay Fownes, who designed the course himself. Since it opened in the summer of 1904, Oakmont has hosted more combined USGA and PGA championships than any other course in the United States. including eight United States Opens, five U.S. Amateurs, three PGA Championships, and two U.S. Women's Opens. Oakmont will host another U.S. Open Championship in 2016.

The course today has 210 bunkers, probably best exemplified by the famous "Church Pews." Golf Digest ranks Oakmont #5 in its most recent version of America's top 100 courses, while Golf Magazine ranks Oakmont 6th.
