The "Sleepy Hollow" name is in reference to Washington Irving's story, set in this area. This very private country club owns 338 acres of land in Westchester County. One-time estate owners William Rockefeller and Frank A. Vanderlip sold the land in 1911 to organizers of Sleepy Hollow Country Club.
