Hazeltine National, which will host the 2016 Ryder Cup Matches, underwent a major renovation following the 2009 PGA Championship. The original clubhouse was demolished, rebuilt, and reopened in October of 2010. On the course, all 18 original greens were rebuilt in part to solve drainage problems, while all of the fairways and the first cut of rough were re-seeded. The course reopened on June 7, 2011.
Hazeltine National is the result of previous USGA president Totton Heffelfinger's dream of building a Minnesota course capable of hosting national and major championships. After the course's opening in 1962 (Robert Trent Jones), it underwent one major renovation by Rees Jones in advance of the 1983 U.S. Senior Open and had some minor tweaks since. For the 2009 PGA, Jones lengthened the course by some 300 yards. In its relatively short history, Hazeltine National has hosted an impressive array of major (and memorable) championships:
1966 U.S. Women's Open (Sandra Spuzich)
1970 U.S. Open (Tony Jacklin)
1977 U.S. Women's Open (Hollis Stacy)
1983 U.S. Senior Open (Billy Casper, playoff)
1991 U.S. Open (Payne Stewart, playoff)
1994 U.S. Mid-Amateur (Tim Jackson)
1999 NCAA Men's Division I Championships
Team: Univ. of Georgia
Individual: Luke Donald (Northwestern University)
2001 USGA Men's State Team Championship (Minnesota)
2002 U.S. PGA Championship (Rich Beem)
2006 U.S. Amateur Championship (Richie Ramsay)
2009 U.S. PGA Championship (Y.E. Yang)
