Dinsmore State Park Golf Course
Route 9

This scenic 18-hole course offers a panoramic view of the beautiful Hudson River and majestic Catskill Mountains. It is the third oldest golf course in the country. Built as a private 9-hole course in the 1890s, it was an amenity to the estates of the Dinsmore, Hoyt and Mills families. The land was donated by Helen Hull. The original course, which is now the south nine, was expanded to 18 holes in 1962.
This well-maintained course has an extremely challenging back nine. The fairways are wide open, and the large greens are undulating. This course doesn't have any water hazards, and the sand bunkers rarely come into play. Tee times are only reserved for weekends; you may make your tee time reservations by calling (914) 889-3126. The seniors & juniors discount rate is only for New York State residents.

I agree with SingleDigits, the view from the first tee is unforgettable and you really know you are playing a historical course. Course has been made into an audobon society protective area, which translates to stay out of the tall grass,it is protected. I would search for a lost ball in there though, just cant play a ball out of there. Fairways are generous however. Greens were fast and tough to read. I walked the course but wish I hadnt as 12 of the 18 holes are up and down hills. The course has 6 par 3's, 4 of which are less then 130 yards. Expect alot of side hill lies, even when driving the ball straight into the fairway. No pro shop so bring everything with you to play.

This could be a phenomenal course as the views of the Hudson Valley & Catskill mtns are fabulous. Lots of change in elevation with decent hole variety. Lots of acreage too -- not crammed in among houses, for example. Unfortunately, it becomes very dry and sun-baked as it lacks a sprinkler system. Moreover, maintenance is sparse. The bunkers should be redone with new sand (and more bunkers put in). Better drainage for the greens & fairways too. I'd lengthen the front nine (turn one of the three par 3s into a par 4 at a minimum).
