This course lies on what was a Revolutionary War-era farmstead, later a country manor. The property was converted into a golf course during the 1930s by owner John Handweg, Sr. The farmer-turned golf architect later designed a total of four courses in the NY-NJ metropolitan area.
On March 31, 2015, the club was sold to two New Jersey families involved in real estate; they reportedly plan to renovate the property and to continue operating it as a golf course.
