Waveland Golf Course
4908 University Ave
Des Moines, IA 50311-3306, United States

515.248.6302
Waveland Golf Course is billed as the oldest municipal golf course west of the Mississippi, dating to 1901.

The feature that sets Waveland apart from the other two Des Moines public courses is the terrain; the entire course is built on wooded hillsides. Many people consider # 3 ("The Tunnel") as the toughest hole. Trees and water lie the right of the tee and a deep valley between golfers and the green.

The standard walking rates are $20 on weekdays, $30 on weekends and holidays (carts are $15/person). Military, 9-hole, and sliding twilight rates are available, as are season passes.

I played Waveland in early April of 2014. Like everywhere else in the great plains and midwest, Des Moines hardly got any snow this winter and the golf courses show it. Despite the brownness of the course, I really enjoyed it. The terrain is exciting. Off the top of my head, I can only remember one hole that didn't have a dramatic elevation change...and even then it might have been slightly uphill all the way. The Par 5 third hole is a beast into the wind...a legit three shot par 5 with tree trouble left and right off the tee. Very cool hole.

My personal favorite hole was easily the par 5 12th. A tee shot that doesn't reveal the scope of the hole, you have to trust your line and let it go. A severe downslope in the landing area throws your ball to the left when you actually want to be on the right of the fairway. The green doesn't reveal itself until the third shot or until you go looking for your second shot. It sits way downhill from the 100 yard marker in the fairway but on top of a little mound that drops off to the left. Just a really unique hole.

I'd play it again, especially later in the year when I'm a little more dialed i and it's green. It's one of those courses where someone took the land that was available and put a golf course on it...it doesn't seem like a bit of earth was moved out of place. Tons of trees and nice views. Play it.

A classic, 'old school' public course. Considering the amount of play (lots), it's in remarkably good shape.
