This 9-hole course made the news in May of 2012 - because of the course's new owner. Club member (and retired John Deere employee) Wally Markham won an Iowa lottery jackpot and decided to purchase the course. La Porte City GC had encountered financial problems; Markham himself had been volunteering with course upkeep and maintenance. Since his purchase, Markham has overseen improvements and repairs to the clubhouse and other facilities; other updates to the course are anticipated in the near future.

The course opened in 1924 and is located about 15 miles southeast of Waterloo. The course is very much open to the public.
