Coal Creek Golf Resort
18112 Township Road 492
Ryley, AB T0B 4A0, Canada

This prairie-style course features water on holes 7, 8, 9, 12, and 13; they actually lie over the "scars" of the mine that once existed here. Likewise, the black sand used in the bunkers is remnant of Dodds Coal Mine, which once dominated this landscape. The course represents a land and environmental reclamation project, with a design by Canadian architect Grant Puddicome.

The standard walking rates are C$42 Wednesdays through Fridays, then C$54 on weekends and holidays (carts are C$30). Senior, junior, and 9-hole discounts are offered, as are corporate and frequent-play packages. Tee-times may be booked up to seven days in advance.

Coal Creek is located roughly 50 miles southeast of Edmonton.

Played Coal Creek for father's day and what a treat. This course is certainly worth the drive. Black sand bunkers were great to hit out of and the greens were by far the best I have ever played in Alberta. This course will only get better as it matures.

Worth the drive - greens were excellent and once they get all the black sand in the bunkers it will be a great track. Good price too during the week.

Played it twice, once in a howling wind, once calm but cooler day. Course was in good shape considering the poor weather. Many of the bunkers on the back nine have no sand in them, thus they are closed on Monday's and Tuesday's in 2013 to work on them. It is a course that you have to have played to know all of the nuances of the track, where to hit and not to hit. Is a very challenging course, some holes are target golf. Greens are quite large, fairways are generous for the most part. Rough is gnarly and very difficult to play out of....fescue !! I should add that I am not a lover of "inland links" type courses.

This is a nice course with lots of challenge, risk and reward opportunities. The facilities are basic, but that is because it is a new course. It is not a course that would be enjoyable on a windy or cooler day as there is little shelter - it is a prairie course. The black sand is a fun addition, but, again, there is significant work to be done completing the bunkers.
