Owned and operated by the City of Phoenix, Papago has long been considered one of the better municipal courses in the United States; it hosts qualifying for the PGA Tour's Phoenix Open. The course opened in 1963 with a design by William F. "Billy" Bell and has was been renovated twice. Arthur "Jack" Snyder oversaw some modest changes to the course in 1977, then in 2008, architect William Fuller oversaw an eight-month closure and complete rebuild.

An early morning arrival is recommended for this highly popular course. Rates vary by season and are posted on the course's web site.

played the front nine shortly after arriving in Phoenix....made me wish we had time to see entire course.

First time I had played Papago in two years. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the course in great shape and had been cleaned up considerably from my last visit. Green, fairways, and tee boxes has ALL been overseeded. We paid $40 to play 18. Still no club house but they did add an additional trailer for the snack bar. I would recommend it if you're looking for a good course and don't mind not having a club house.
