The notable architects H.S. Colt and C.H. Alison collaborated on the design of this course, which opened for play in 1925. After surviving financial problems during the Great Depression and World War II, Knollwood hosted the 1956 men's U.S. Amateur Championship, which was won by the noted amateur Harvie Ward. More changes were overseen by architect Larry Packard in 1973.
