Nine holes first opened at Fort Belvoir in 1935, and now 36 attractive holes are spread over two courses, "Woodlawn" and "Gunston." Priority access goes to active duty and retired military members and DoD civilians, along with contractors, and tee-times before noon are on a lottery system.
A "South 9" used to be open here, but was closed in 2007.

New holes has been added and are awful...ugly, unimaginative, etc. The old courses were so much better. After two years or more the new holes and the course should be in great shape - they are not. Many of the greens were in terrible shape. So sad as this course can be so interesting, challenging and attractive to play. No longer so great a course.

Several of the new holes that were added to both Gunston and Woodlawn look and fee like a four year old designed them with a bowl of Cheerio's. Pot drains in the middle of a down hill fairway is a stupid way to play golf. Someday they may even grow grass on this course that has enough turf that you are not afraid you will break a club every time you use an iron. Maybe in the old days this was a good layout but not any more. Sad!

It has been over a year with new course lay out and still Skycaddie has not updated the course and I will not renew my subscription. Every member is now using range finders.

Gunston course has a beautiful old style layout with plenty of challenges. The course itself forces good course management as several fairways are offset from tee box, with plenty of blind tee and approach shots. Gamble wrong, play wrong for this course. A must play course if in the DC Metro area.
