Diablo Grande Golf & Country Club

This facility is located in the ranch hills west of Modesto, ten miles off the Interstate 5. The hilly terrain includes creeks, canyons, native wildlife, and several vineyards.

Although two courses were built as part of the club, the Jack Nicklaus-designed Legends Course closed in the spring of 2014 as a result of persistent drought and watering restrictions. While it was popular and demanding, the Legends course (like most other Nicklaus-designed courses) required tremendous amounts of water to maintain the turf. Ultimately, the water costs made the Legends course far too expensive to keep open.

The remaining 18 here is the Denis Griffiths-designed Ranch Course, with long, narrow fairways placing a premium on distance and accuracy. Several creeks and water hazards, rolling terrain, and stands of mature oaks present the main challenges here. The standard rates (with cart) are $49 on weekdays, $59 on weekends and holidays. Various discounts and specials are also available.

Played Legends on a Saturday, pace was good on the front nine but slowed to a crawl after hole 11. Scenery gets dinged one star for visible construction equipment marring otherwise good views, maintenance gets dinged a single star for bald worn areas near teeboxes and at the front edge of some fairways.

Great place to play. Two courses at one place. Ranch alittle more difficult than the Legends. Great staff. Would really love if they would place a cell phone tower somewhere close. No service. Will always play here.
