This Tom Fazio design has been ranked one of the best, if not the best, private courses in North Carolina. The club is very private; visitors are permitted only as guests of members.
The club's founders chose to name the course after Wade Hampton III (1818-1902), who was a Confederate cavalry leader during the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865), an anti-Reconstructionist slave-owner, and a politician. Hampton's family actually owned the land on which the course lies.
