Marketing hype aside, Bel Meadow is generally considered one of the more challenging public courses in West Virginia. It hosted the West Virginia Open in 1967 and 1971, won both times by San Snead, who commented on the toughness of the second nine. Bel Meadow is a Robert Trent Jones, Sr.-design that opened in 1965. Fifty-one bunkers are in play, as is water on 12 of the 18 holes.
