Hamilton Golf Club was founded in 1892 and was first located on a site near the now demolished Hamilton Palace, former home of the Dukes of Hamilton. In 1925, the club moved this site and a layout by five-time Open champion James Braid.

The course today plays over much the same layout, although an ambitious tree-planting program has transformed Hamilton GC into a mature, parkland-style layout. Still, some places on the course offer views over the Glasgow area, out to Ben Lomond.
