Golf was first played here in 1928 when the course opened as Middletown Golf Club (1928, Robert J. Ross and Maurice Kearney), but it underwent a major rebuild by Pete Dye in 1982 and another redesign in 1989 by Bobby Weed. This is one of the private courses in the TPC roster and hosts the PGA Tour's annual stop in Hartford, which was first known as the Insurance City Open and later as the Greater Hartford Open. The course has been ranked among the top ten in Connecticut by Golf Digest, as well as the best private course by Connecticut Golfer magazine.
The finishing holes are known as the "Golden Triangle" -- 15 through 17 play around a four-acre pond, while 18 finishes in a a grass amphitheater.

I've been going to the GHO (now Travelers but always GHO to me) since I was a kid, so finally getting the chance to play the TPC was a dream. It definitely lived up to my expectations and then some.
The new practice facility was awesome, with pyramids of balls at the range, chipping green, and putting green. You really felt like you were on tour for the day. We actually played the course one month prior to the PGA tour stop this year, so the course was in excellent condition. Next to Lake of Isles and Wampanoag, these were the best greens I've putted in the state.
My only concern the whole time was that they run a tight ship and we were warned that slow play could result in the switching of tees (which would have put us at the red...wah wah), or in having to skip a hole. I'm a fast golfer, but I can't say the same about a couple others in my group, but we flew through there in less than 4 hours. I was worried the whole way that we'd get to the 15th or 16th and they'd have us skip one of the signature holes.
All in all, from the practice facility, through the course, it was definitely a great experience. Although I can't see myself shelling out 175 bucks weekly to play, I wouldn't mind making the trip once a year.
