This course opened with nine holes in 1893; the second nine followed in 1897. Due to construction of the M60 motorway in the 1970s, the course was altered slightly, while other renovations since 2005 include new drainage and irrigation, along with a tree-planting program.

Visitors and societies are welcome with advance booking; the standard visitor walking rates are £37.50/round or £45/day on weekdays, and £45 Fridays through Sundays.
