Golf was first played here in 1912 on a basic course laid out by Royal Flying Corps aviators, who were stationed at this RAF aerodrome. In fact, two pilots attempted the first-ever east-to-west trans-Atlantic flight from here, but the flight crashed at sea.

Eventually, a 9-hole layout was developed and eventually became the current 18-hole, parkland-style course in 1997. That design was by the course's manager and teaching professional, Richard Blake. Of note is the 13th hole, a par-5 that plays to 608 yards from the white tees. Two large practice areas, a warm-up net, and a putting green with a practice bunker are also available.

Visitors are welcome; the all-day visitor rates are £40 on weekdays and £50 on weekends, while a variety of specials and periodic discounts are posted on the club's web site. Societies and groups are also welcome with prior arrangement.
