This highly-regarded parkland-style course was designed by five-time Open champion and prolific architect J.H. Taylor, and opened in 1911. Over the decades, many regional amateur and professional tournaments have been held here. Three lakes play a prominent part in every round, especially on the 193-yard 11th hole, which three-Open champion Sir Henry Cotton once described as "the toughest par-3 in England." Peter Allis described the 15th hole as one of the most scenic holes he'd ever seen.

The course is owned by Manchester City Council and privately operated.
