This course looms large in American golf history as the place where Arnold Palmer won the 1960 U.S. Open Championship. In fact, eight USGA championships have been played over this course, most recently the 2012 men's U.S. Amateur Championship, won by Steven Fox (University of Tennessee-Chattanooga) in a dramatic playoff. Notable architect William S. Flynn (1890-1945) designed the course, which opened in 1922. Modern-day architect Tom Doak oversaw a restoration of the original Flynn design from 2008 to 2009.

The main 18-hole course is augmented by the "Rip Arnold" par-3 course. Visitors are permitted only as guests of a member.
