Mattaponi (pronounced "matta-poh-NYE") Springs is a high-end public-access course in central Virginia's Caroline County. The course design was a collaboration between Bob Lohmann and Mike Benkusky. The name "Mattaponi" references the Mattaponi Indians, who lived and hunted in this area. The "springs" are actual freshwater springs located throughout the property and feed into the Mattaponi River.

WOW! What a course. They do like to kick you in the n#ts right out of the gate. Number 1 was a way to wake you up for the rest of the round. Massive elevation changes and superb fairways... The greens were very nice, and they too had plenty of tiers and undulation. All of the bunkers were groomed and it looked like the tee boxes had never been used!
The fairways were like hitting off fake turf. It didn't seem real!
The staff was very helpful and polite. We played early morning on a Friday and were the first ones out, so pace was not an issue.
