Torrey Pines Golf Course
11480 N Torrey Pines Rd
La Jolla, CA 92037-1096, United States

Unlike most courses that have hosted a U.S. Open Championship and a regular PGA Tour event, Torrey Pines GC is open to the public — because it is owned and operated by the City of San Diego. It is located atop cliffs on the edge of the Pacific Ocean near San Diego, and includes wildlife and the famous Torrey pine trees that are indigenous to the area. Rees Jones ("The Open Doctor") oversaw the reconditioning of the South Course in advance of the (memorable!) 2008 U.S. Open Championship, in which Tiger Woods defeated Rocco Mediate in a Monday playoff.

Please note that on both courses, the black tees are playable only with permission from the course. Rates shown below are for the South Course; North Course rates, as well as twilight and resident rates, are lower.

This course was supposed to be the highlight of our west coast trip. NOT! The course was in very poor condition! Highly overrated and expensive!
  capnkts - 4/15/21
Torrey Pines is expensive for those that are out of town and cheap for residents, but the residents are paying the state and local taxes that I'm sure are not cheap, so it's worth the price. Great condition, and we played it in November where they were already growing the rough for the Farmers tournament in early spring and getting the South course ready for the 2021 U. S. Open. The North course actually had higher rough than the South course and it was extremely difficult to find your golf ball in the rough, so make sure you find a marker for where your ball enters the rough each time so you can find it.

North course has bent grass greens and the South course has poa annua greens, which both putted great. Very strange breaks in the greens where it appears to break away from the ocean, but all of the greens break towards the ocean regardless of what the green slope appears to look like.

Tremendous views and really neat to play a U. S. Open and PGA Tour course. Has a lot of play on it from the regulars that live there, but everyone was very cordial and nice and we really didn't have to wait to hit our shots on each hole.

It was fun to watch the Farmers tournament on TV and see where we had been, and it will be even more fun to watch the 2021 U. S. Open and see how the pros fare on the course that will have penalizing rough and high winds.

If you'd like to play a U. S. Open course, it's worth the money.

This is useful information for people who are on this topic. I know some of them on the great resource so I obviously have to share it with them too!

Torrey Pines: South Course is absolutely amazing. Views are spectacular. Will play again.
  Ms Swagnificent - 3/5/14
Very expensive round on either course for out of towners, which seems to be a bit unfair but perhaps since it's a municipal course the locals tax dollars probably makes up for the difference in the green fees.

I've played several PGA / European tour courses in the states and abroad over the past 4 years and Torrey Pines did not let down considering its a public course, albeit I played there just 3 weeks after the Farmers Open so I would expect the course would still be in pretty good shape.

This definitely is a course where you must keep the ball in the fairways to have a chance at even a decent round. If you are in the rough it will be a very long day with thick / deep grass that eats your ball.

The putting greens are super TRICKY to read and played extremely tough.

The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. The ocean views and mountains in the back drop were simply amazing.

Depending on your tee time, your play may be impacted by the dense southern california fog that looks more like thick layers of smoke. My understanding is that it typically burns off very late morning/noon.

Overall it was an excellent day on the links and I would definitely play it again as the guest of a local resident of course.

I played it about a month before the Farmer's Open. The whole course was unbelievably beautiful and the greens were perfect. The rough was brutal!! We don't have the chance to play many U.S. Open courses, so Go Play!!!
  ally1957 - 11/26/13
in the area got to play south course but its too expensive (well I thought it was until a got a price list to play Pebble Beach)
Nice course tremendous views couple of elevation changes but nothing special it was cart path only for buggies so I walked it kept up with buggies no problem
  mitchscaddy - 10/3/13
South course greens were phenomenal. Views were spectacular. Course overall was in good shape. Over priced for non-resident. Had to play it once but probably won't again. I don't think it is worth the price.
  wpurkiss - 7/8/13
Some of the best ocean views of any coastal course!
  darinboles - 6/2/13
Both courses are in great shape following the Junior World Championships last week. If you are a local, you cannot find a better value!
  TEnglehart - 5/12/13
One of the best public courses around. Not difficult off the tee but very tough greens. Very expensive unless you live in SD County. I like the South course because of the views and pros play it but I think the North is just about as good (and much cheaper).
  SkooterSkippy - 4/23/13
Even though the greens on the South Course were aerated, the course was incredible.
  Murphinthecape - 4/3/13
Even in the fog it was a thrill to play such a great public venue.

i played the south course, what phenomenal ocean views. course in great shape, greens a bit sandy in early Dec. over charged as a non resident, paid additional booking fee of $43. will do it again
  cthibault - 10/15/12
Course was in overseeding and had lots of problems areas on the fairways, rough and greens.
  theta xi - 9/24/12
May be a once in a lifetime opportunity to play the south course, but it was a bit expensive overall.
  DJWSD - 7/22/12
Course is in great shape
  agipril - 7/2/12
I played the South course in June. It was a great experience. The views are stunning. This course is a definite bucket list item.
  bkuehn1952 - 4/2/12
Terrific views of the ocean and the maintenance is superb. Rangers aggressively push things along. Pretty pricey for out of towners. If you are not able to reliably hit 250 yard drives, this will be a long course for you.
  X Flier - 12/19/11
North course has very nice views.
  klefebvre243799 - 7/17/11
I never pass up a chance to play here. Breathtaking views on a challenging, yet very playable track. Best muni anywhere.
  hpinsf - 7/6/11
Wow, Torrey Pines South is stunning. The holes are so classically framed with high lipped fairway bunkering. You know exactly what you have to do on every tee box. The fairways are fairly narrow, and the green side bunkers are deep. Be confident if you are going for sucker pins or hit the fat of the green and move on. The first 4 holes are beautiful right off the puts a smile on your face, as long as you didn't triple bogey all four of them. Holes 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 16 are other very noteworthy holes. Pricey for non residents, but how many US Open courses can you walk on to?
  rgarrett88 - 5/14/11
I play here often, mostly on the North course. It's beautiful, my favorite course in San Diego. BUT, they charge too much for the carts, $38, with no GPS. The course is fantastic before and after The Farmers Ins. Tournament in late Jan. each year
