While the club dates to 1923, the course opened in May of 1930. According to reliable sources, Perry Maxwell was the author of the original course design. Then in 1969, Philadelphia native George Fazio oversaw the first major renovation. In 2008, the club retained architect Ron Forse for a major renovation, which resulted in only three holes remaining from the original 1930 routing. Chester Valley hosted Philadelphia's Senior PGA Tour event from 1985 until 1997.
