Once nicknamed the 'Valley of the Moon' by the author Jack London (1876-1916) who once lived nearby, Oakmont Golf Club is a 36-hole facility with two courses designed by architect Ted Robinson, Sr. The West course is a par-72 layout built in 1964, while the shorter East course dates to 1973. Both courses have an abundance of creeks, ponds and large, mature oak trees.

The visitor walking rates for the West course are $34 on Mondays through Thursdays, $39 on Fridays, then $52 on weekends and holidays (carts are $16). Sliding twilight, senior, and 9-hole rates are available.

2 1/2 stars.

This course is a tale of 2 nines. Oakmont's front nine is banal and boasts small dome shaped shot repellent greens with fairly large slopes.

The back nine has a lot more variety and character with normal sized greens that are much less severe. Hole 10 is a very pretty hole and should be the signature for the course.

The surrounding pine tree laden mountains are quite pretty and serve as a nice backdrop to many shots. Water comes into play on many of the shots, especially on the back nine. Unfortunately, the many many houses that line most of the fairways take away from any beauty the course has.
