The course winds its way through mature forest land, dotted with swampy areas and streams. The routing is very interesting with doglegs, elevation changes and penalty areas. Bunkering is moderate.
The day we played, the tees were pretty chewed up but playable. Fairways and rough were in good shape with some areas showing the stress of play and summer weather. Greens have quite a bit of slope. Our day had the greens running slower than average. The surfaces were smooth and in good condition.
This course could be rated higher if the maintenance was perfect. That being said, for a popular and highly used public course, Stony Creek is a very nice course.

Super bargain if you are a senior, walk, and have a Golf Assn. of Michigan membership. Enjoyable course -- only minor issues are pace of play and varying green speeds. Would be really great if people picked up pace, replaced/repaired divots and pitch marks, and raked traps, but these seem to be problems at ALL courses.
