The late William "Bill" Powell (1916-2009) won the 2009 PGA of America Distinguished Service Award. Why? Because against unfair barriers and pressure, he became (and reportedly still is) the only African-American man to found, design, and build a golf course in the United States.

He built the first nine between 1946 and 1948; the second nine opened in 1978. The course is (fittingly) now on the National Register of Historic Places.
