Designed and built by Sherm Byers, Jr., Burning Tree Golf Course opened its doors to the public in 1975 as a nine hole course. It remained a nine hole course until 1989. During the excavation of the back 9, a mastodon was discovered which is now known as the "Burning Tree" mastodon. The back 9 became open to the public in 1990.
