Donald Ross designed this course, which opened in 1921 and is advertised as being essentially the same, unchanged layout. Local writer Lee Pace described the course thusly: "Mid Pines was never conceived as a daunting task to the finest players competing under championship conditions… Mid Pines was intended simply as a fun course with adequate challenge for members and guests of a private club and resort."
Nevertheless, the course is of tournament quality; Carol Semple Thompson won her fourth consecutive USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship here in 2002.
Rates vary by season; the March-May rates are $150 weekdays and $180 weekends, while the November-February rates are $85 weekdays and $95 weekends.

Loved the course. Nice variety of holes. Scraggly look to course. Greens were very nice but slower than they looked which confounded me throughout the round. The contours of the greens would make course super tough if too speedy.
Course had gotten 6+ inches of rain the previous week so bunkers had standing water and parts of course very soggy.

Great condition, challenging greens, lacking the usual Southern hospitality.

Overall a great golf course. Unfortunately when we played a thunderstorm came through the night before and caused some damage to the course. I thought this was actually a little better than Pine Needles. The 18th hole is a great finishing hole.

Mid Pines is one of Donald Ross's best works in my opinion. Has wide open fairways and huge greens. This is a must play while in Pinehurst. Just to walk the same fairways that the course is still in its original layout. Always in super shape and some of the best greens in the area
