After a membership spilt with what is now Golden Valley Golf & Country Club, MGC opened in 1917 with a course designed by Willie Park, Jr. When a larger clubhouse was needed in 1919, Donald Ross redesigned part of the course. During the 1990s, Tom Lehman (1996 Open Championship winner) hosted an annual two-day celebrity fundraising event (The Dayton's Challenge) at this course.
