While Mesaba CC is a semi-private facility, they tacitly encourage public play. Golf Digest once said "Mesaba is a must play" and rated the course on their "America's Best Places to Play" list.

Since 1926, Mesaba has hosted an annual amateur match-play event, the Vern Fryklund Northwest Invitational; the event typically occurs in early September.
