This elegant, old-school parkland layout lies on the south shore of Lake Erie outside Buffalo; the name comes from the Iroquois word Wanakah, meaning "view of the lake." But the original architectural pedigree is vague; Willie Watson is most likely the original designer of this course, which debuted in 1925, although Bob Cupp and Jay Morrish did some work here in 1983.

Architect Chris Wilczynski, previously with Arthur Hills' design firm, is overseeing a major restoration of the course, which includes re-grading some fairways for improved drainage and rebuilding several bunkers and tee-boxes. Wilczynski also had numerous trees removed because they impeded both maintenance and play.

Wanakah's most popular feature might be the small greens, which feature many subtle spines and ridges. Without question, Wanakah's signature hole is #15, a 206-yard par-3, requiring a tee shot over water to a small, well-bunkered green.
