Dustin Johnson's return to the PGA Tour after a six-month absence is an unqualified success. Oh sure, he may have missed the cut at his first tournament in six months (Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego) and at his first Florida event (Honda Classic). But in the three cuts he has made, he finished T-4 at Pebble Beach, made a playoff in Los Angeles, and then won yesterday at the WGC-Cadillac at Doral.

And on a tough Trump National Doral course that frustrated first-round leader J.B. Holmes (75) Bubba Watson (71), Adam Scott (71), and Henrik Stenson (72), Johnson nearly aced the par-3 4th for the second day in a row, for crying out loud. The only golfers who bested Johnson on Sunday were Germany's Marcel Siem (67, T-38) and Englishman Danny Willett (68, T-12).

The Gil Hanse-redesigned course also frustrated Rory McIlroy all week. On Friday, Rory McIlroy's 3-iron shot went into the water, so Rory decided the 3-iron itself belonged in the water. On Saturday, an enterprising scuba diver decided to hunt for the offending club... and he got it:


Mr. Trump returned the club to McIlroy before Sunday's final round...


But it didn't help Rory at the 18th hole — that's for sure:



The only really awkward moment for viewers was when NBC Sports bungled their coverage of Dustin Johnson's ace at the 4th hole on Saturday. They cut the on-course audio and gallery cheering, leaving only Jimmy Roberts's reaction and some surprisingly stilted analysis from Frank Nobilo:


Definitely a rare blunder by Tommy Roy's crew.

J.B. Holmes may have skidded on Sunday, but gentleman that he is, he still gave a gracious hat-tip to the tournament volunteers and staff:
