Patrick Reed wins another playoff By Torleif Sorenson on 1/13/15
In winning his fourth PGA Tour event on Monday at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, Reed hit several outstanding shots under pressure — including during a playoff against a major champion. At the 16th hole and four behind the lead, Reed holed out from the fairway — an 80-foot dagger. Then, he ripped two long shots to hit the 72nd green in two, made the putt for birdie, and got himself into a playoff with last year's winner, Zach Johnson. And on the first playoff hole, when Johnson's third flew the green into a horrible lie, Reed found the dance floor and sank a 19-footer for the win. You might recall that Reed drew the ire of quite a few golf fans when, after winning at Doral last year, pronounced himself one of the top five golfers in the world at that moment. But since then, Reed has stayed fairly tough. At the Ryder Cup in September, at which the Americans famously lost to the Europeans, Reed had the best record on the U.S. side, going 3-0-1. And now, in competition against only players who won on the PGA Tour in the last 12 months, Reed has prevailed again, staring down the 2007 Masters Champion on a really tough closing hole in overtime. So what is it about Patrick Reed? "I think it's just because I'm stubborn. I don't really care. I go out there and just kind of focus on my golf game, and I don't really care what anyone else is doing or however anyone else hits the shot. I just know how I can do it, and you know, what works for me and what makes me allows it to be more consistent under pressure."You might call it arrogance, but this approach is not terribly different from that of Tiger Woods during his prime. And we have seen him bulldoze dozens of competitors on his way to winning 14 professional major championships.

srogers13 says:
ummm, I thought he dropped an eagle on 16 from the fairway from about 80 yards, not a bunker shot? 1/13/15
srogers13: You're correct; it was a beautifully-placed shot from the fairway. Momentary brain dump. (Article since corrected. Homer nods.) 1/13/15
