Tiger will play Phoenix

When Tiger Woods revealed that he will play in Phoenix for the first time since 2001, many of us thought back to his ace at the 16th hole.

Thankfully, so did Tiger:


This is actually a smart move on several fronts:

  • This will get him back in the good graces of the Phoenix Open organizers and the Thunderbirds, since he has not played in the tournament in more than a decade.

  • Tiger's reappearance is likely to help drive admission and ticket sales, which will be helpful in the face of competition from the Super Bowl, which will be held in nearby Glendale, Arizona.

  • Tiger may face more of a "level playing field" in that the TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course has undergone a renovation since last year's tournament. This means that the entire field will be facing some unfamiliar challenges. This does not guarantee a Woods victory, but in theory, it could make the conclusion of the tournament more exciting.

The odds just increased significantly that I might actually watch some golf on TV. For all of Tiger's troubles and his inability to recreate the magic of the 2000's, I still find golf much more interesting when he is in the mix.
