Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey wins the McGladery Classic
By mustang6560 on 10/22/12
I didn't get to watch the final round of the McGladery Classic but I watched enough of The Golf Channel Saturday evening and Sunday morning to know the storyline heading into the final round at the Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club.

Sunday was supposed to be about tournament host Davis Love III and Jim Furyk. The Ryder Cup captain versus his Ryder Cup captain's pick. It was supposed to be a magical story of triumph for either player. DL3 could have rebounded from his Ryder Cup loss and Jim could have ended his miserable season on a positive note.

But out nowhere, Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey stormed the Seaside Course and ruined the storyline The Golf Channel had prepared for us. The South Carolina native shot a bogey-free 10-under-par 60 (and he had a birdie putt on 18 for 59) to win his first PGA Tour event.
"Oh, man," Gainey said. "I tell you, you're out here on the PGA TOUR. You're playing with the best players in the world. Ninety-nine percent of these guys have already won, and won majors, big tournaments. The only show I can say I've won is the 'Big Break.' Now I can sit here and say I've won the McGladrey Classic here at Sea Island, and I'm very proud to be in this tournament and very proud to win. And wow, it's been a whirlwind day.

"I didn't know having 24 putts and shooting 60 would be like this," he said. "So I'm pretty stoked about it."
To be honest, I didn't even know Tommy was in the field at the McGladery Classic let alone anywhere near contention but I'm thrilled for him. I've seen Tommy play twice now (once at the Zurich and once at the True South) and he's a likable guy. If there is such a thing as a blue collar professional golfer, it's Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey.
