My Goals for the 2012 World Am
By mustang6560 on 8/27/12
The 2012 Golf.com World Amateur Handicap Championship is underway here in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I had a blast last year and I expect more of the same this year. But, as with most things in life, it's important to set goals even if the point of the experience is fun. So here are my goals for the 2012 World Am!

My Goals for the 2012 World Am

  • Avoid careless two-stroke penalties. If you followed my coverage of the World Am last year, then you might remember that I almost got disqualified on the first hole of the first round for playing the wrong golf ball. Well, in order to avoid a repeat of last year's mishap, I've decided to play a yellow golf ball this year — the Srixon Z-Star Tour Yellow. I know I won't be the only person using a yellow golf ball, however, more people play a white golf ball so hopefully I've reduced the chances of playing the wrong golf ball dramatically. Don't worry, though, I also plan to verify my ball mark before each shot!

  • Finish inside the top 15. Last year, I finished inside the top 25 in my flight — T21. My goal for this year is to move up at least six spots to finish inside the top 15. I would love to sit here and say my goal is to finish inside the top 10, but I want to set realistic expectations. My current handicap index is 10.8, which is my lowest ever, so I expect my competition will be better than it was in 2011.

  • Win one of the daily skins games. I didn't play in the daily skins game last year, but I heard several people won hundreds of dollars. The buy-in is $20 per day but you have a chance to win decent money, especially if you birdie one of the hardest holes on the course for a net eagle. I'm not exactly sure how the game will work, but I'm going to give it a try. Hopefully I net eagle one hole...or two!

  • Shoot in the 80s all four days. This is the loftiest of my goals. I only managed to break 90 once last year and it was on the last day, but I've been playing some decent golf lately so I think I can do it. If I don't, I won't be too upset, though. It's hard to be upset when I'm getting the opportunity to play golf for a week in Myrtle Beach — and for work for that matter!

  • Have a lot of fun! Even if I shoot over 100 everyday or if I finish in last place in my flight, at the end of the day the World Am is about having fun, which I plan to do. I'll be playing beautiful golf courses, meeting new and exciting people, and enjoying the world's largest 19th Hole. I'm not sure I couldn't have fun even if I tried!
In addition to this preview, I'll also be writing daily recaps about my experience at the World Am. I hope you enjoy the ride this week. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment and I'll answer it as quick as I can!
