Tiger Woods may fail to qualify for his own golf tournament--the Chevron World Challenge--for the first time in the history of the event.

The annual offseason event is a charitable tournament and it features an 18 player field including the current four major winners, the top 11 available from the Official World Golf Rankings, the Defending Champion and two special exemption players selected by the Tiger Woods Foundation. The kicker is, everyone in the 18-player field must be ranked inside top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings as of Monday, September 19.

Tiger is currently ranked 46th and depending the result from the BMW Championship, he may fall outside the top 50, which would make him ineligible. And because he's not playing at Coghill, he has no way affect the outcome.

Tiger has had a rough few years at his own tournament. He did not play in the event in 2008 (knee injury) or 2009 (Elin injury) and he lost to the 2010 U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell last year in a playoff. This year is no different.

I wonder if the tournament will make an exception for Tiger if he does in fact fail to qualify for the Chevron World Challenge? It would make sense to me if they did considering it's HIS tournament AND without him, the tournament will not make nearly as much money.
