Hello 2011!

Can you believe the 2011 TOUR is already upon us? Felt like just yesterday Tiger was missing cuts and Dustin Johnson was giving tournaments away...

Joking aside, the 2011 season kicks off today in Hawaii at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. The 34-man field of last year's TOUR winners may not include Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson, but there is enough star-power I think to gain some viewership.
The 2011 season gets under way Thursday on the Plantation Course at Kapalua with a 34-man field of tour winners from last year. Robert Garrigus was the last one to get in, winning at Disney in the final event of the year. Ogilvy was the first to qualify by winning the Tournament of Champions a year ago by one shot.
The off season for professional golf is a little different than most sports. With the NFL or NBA, there are several months between the regular season (including playoffs) and the start of the new season, which creates a distinct "off season".

Even though the same players do not play week in and week out, you can typically find a golf tournament on TV most weekends. Because of all of the events outside of the PGA TOUR, it may seem to casual fans that the golf season never really ends.

Personally, I like golf and I like being able to find a tournament on TV. But, I don't think golf fans have enough time in between seasons to actually "miss" the game. But you wonder if having a more distinct "golf season" would allow golf fans to develop the same sense of longing NFL fans have during their off season?
