Crystal Downs is ranked the #11 course in the United States by Golf Magazine, but has only hosted one USGA championship (1991 U.S. Senior Amateur, Bill Bosshard) because of its remote location in northwestern Michigan. The course is one of Dr. Alister Mackenzie's most important designs — in fact, it was co-designed with Perry Maxwell in 1929.
