This is one of two courses owned and operated by Glasgow Golf Club; the very notable Gailes Links is located 34.5 miles to the southwest in the seaside town of Irvine.

The Killermont course was laid out by four-time Open champion Old Tom Morris in December 1903 and was the last 18-hole course he designed. The course was then updated by five-time Open champion and prolific architect James Braid (1924), and then by architect David Thomas (2002-05).

Before becoming a course architect, Thomas had been a professional golfer of distinction, finishing twice as runner-up in the Open Championship and playing on four Ryder Cup teams. He and his son Paul were responsible for the major bunkering programme which started in late 2002, reshaping many of the existing bunkers, removing some and adding new ones to take account of modern conditions and equipment.
