This club was founded in 1913, while the course opened in 1914 with a design by local professional Charles Mayo. Then in 1935, five-time Open champion and prolific architect James Braid oversaw the lengthening and modification of the course.

Visitors are welcome on weekdays, then after 2:00 p.m. on weekends and public holidays, although advance booking is recommended. The standard walking rates vary by season and are posted on the club's web site. Four electric carts are available at £25/round or £40/day. Societies are also welcome with prior arrangement.
