This course opened in 1906 with nine holes designed by the City of Newcastle's teaching professional at the time, John Caird. The layout is largely the same today, although the course has become a parkland-style layout as the result of an aggressive tree-planting program undertaken during the 1990s.

Visitors and societies are welcome, but should book in advance. The summer visitor walking rates are £29 weekdays and £31 weekends; juniors and guests of members enjoy various discounts.
