Scottish architect Tom Bendelow did the original design of this course following the club's founding in 1912. However, the design did not meet with popular demand, so the club retained Texas-based architect Ralph Plummer to overhaul the course in 1947. The traditionalist architecture team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw oversaw a restoration / facelift to the course in 1995; the changes included re-positioned tees, reconstructed bunkers, and reseeding the fairways with 419 Bermuda and the greens with bent grass.

The facilities include tennis courts, a swimming pool, and luxury dining facilities. Lakewood is a private country club; visitors are permitted only as guests of members.
