Rose weathers the storms
By Torleif Sorenson on 4/27/15

Weather tormented golfers and tournament officials at this past week's PGA Tour stop, the Zurich Classic at TPC Louisiana. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, play had to be stopped and/or suspended, forcing golfers to hit the course at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.

But 2013 U.S. Open champion Justin Rose outlasted everyone through the wet conditions, tying for third-best all week by hitting 82% of the fairways in regulation, avoiding bogey over his final 66 holes (including all 30 he played Sunday), and shooting a final-round 66.

However, Rose had to stay around and wait for the rest of the field to finish.

Cameron Tringale is probably best-known for insisting that the PGA of America formally let him be disqualified from last year's PGA Championship. Now, he will be thought of for a fine effort in the Crescent City, falling just 18 inches short of a playoff. His solo second is his best-ever finish on the PGA Tour.

Boo Weekley returned to the top of the leaderboard at a Tour event, shooting -20 268 and finishing alone in third place, one ahead of Jim Herman and Jason Day.

Ontario native David Hearn was another shot adrift; his T-6 is his best finish on the PGA Tour since his T-2 at the 2013 John Deere, which Jordan Spieth famously captured in a playoff.

As you might expect, Rose set the tournament scoring record at TPC Louisiana with a -22 266 (the old record was 268) and also owns PGA Tour win in six consecutive seasons. The only golfer with a longer such streak is (believe it or not) Dustin Johnson — with eight.

Surely, the Zurich Insurance Group marketing people are pleased, too, since Rose wears their logo on his golf shirts.

We also give great credit to TPC Louisiana course superintendent Robb Arnold and his entire grounds staff for keeping the course playable in the face of a deluge of rain. With all of the divots taken on a soaking wet course, we know that the next week will be just as busy for them as was this past week.

I know little about Justin Rose but of that little, everything is positive. He is one of the players I hope has great success. It seems like decades ago when I was watching the Open Championship and he dunked that wedge on #18 to finish in the top 10 as an amateur.
